What is engineered plank

Due to its structure, engineering board is characterized by increased moisture resistance, durability and ability to withstand temperature fluctuations, which makes it a suitable solution for installation on warm floors.

Method of installation

The main difference between parquet and engineered flooring is the method of installation. Parquet board is installed in a floating way: a substrate of roll or board materials is laid on the floor screed, after which the flooring itself is assembled. Elements are connected to each other by the locking method, forming a single surface that is not rigidly attached to the base and walls. This method is quite simple and allows you to perform the installation yourself, without the need to involve specialists.

Engineering board is also assembled on the system of groove-ship, but, unlike the parquet board, it is fixed to the base. For this purpose, plywood sheets laid on the screed or the floor screed itself are used. The installation of the engineering board requires a perfectly flat surface and the use of adhesives, which complicates the process. Therefore, it is recommended to entrust the installation of the engineering board to professionals.

By material composition

Another difference between hardwood flooring and engineered flooring lies in the structure of the materials that make them up. Although both types of flooring are multi-layered, their internal composition is different.

In hardwood flooring, the key element is a stabilizing layer made of planks arranged perpendicular to the other layers. This layer helps to distribute loads evenly and reduces stress between other parts of the structure. Then there is a bearing layer made of technical wood with different fiber direction, which makes the board resistant to vertical and bending loads. The decorative layer is made of veneer or precious wood, giving the floor the appearance of natural wood. On top of it several layers of protective coating are applied - lacquer, oil or wax, which protect the wood from wear and moisture.

Engineering board, unlike parquet, has only two main layers: a base of multilayer moisture-resistant plywood and a decorative layer of natural wood. Veneer is not used in engineering board, and the decorative layer is always made of solid wood, which gives the coating special strength and durability.

By the method of connection

Parquet board is connected by locking method: on the ends of each board in the carrier layer grooves of complex shape are cut out. To install the next board is brought in at an angle of 20-40 degrees, and the lock is easily snapped, creating a monolithic coating with virtually invisible joints. This ensures easy assembly and an aesthetically pleasing appearance.

Engineered plank elements are joined using a tongue and groove system, which is simpler in design. The boards are inserted one into the other in the grooves, and are padded with a mallet for a tight joint. However, there are also engineered boards on the market with a locking joint that combines the convenience of installing hardwood flooring with the benefits of engineered flooring.
